minutes of the September 4, 2018, meeting of SPAN held at 70 Glasgow
Street in Clyde, N.Y. at 6:30 p.m..
Present: Tom Castellano; Sandi Bastedo; Rose Jeanne Strakal; Dolly Romer; John Robert; Hugh Miner; and David Hickey
1 August minutes corrected: #3 should read “Rose Jeanne provided” rather than “Rose Jeanne gave” and # 11 should say “Tom Sawtelle” rather than “Hugh Miner”. Corrected minutes were accepted.
2 John Robert gave the treasurer’s report for two months. The report showed a balance of $4602.03.
3.KeeKee Run: Sue Ayers , Steve Moore paintings & specialty coffee.
4 Rose Jean Strakal discussed the upcoming visit to the Town of Galen board meeting to request funds for the SPAN sponsored tour bus trips. Discussion of where other sources of funding comes from.
On membership, there was a discussion of how to promote new members and keep our current members, Mailings was one idea. Could we use mass mailings for all Clyde residents? Could we pair with the Galen Historical Society? Perhaps we could get new members at the alumni event and the barbershop chorus event and on bus tours.
5 The next annual Alumni/Homecoming Game event is set for Friday, September 21st. Gena Duffy is helping to coordinate details at the school along with Lynn Carnevale and Donna Riviello. There will be a VIP tent from 6 – 7. A ticket for $5.00 will gain entrance to th VIP tent and the game. Those who wish may enter the parade. RSVP to SPAN if possible. Reunion tags will be available at the sign- in table. Hugh, Tom and John volunteered to work at the table starting at 5:30 that night. The alumni event will be promoted at the Red Jacket game the week before.
6 Hugh announced that the date for the Barbershop Chorus will be Sunday, October 21st at 3:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Span might try to sell food and water, details to be worked out at our next meeting. Rose Jeanne will make a flier, Hugh will create a poster and arrange a robo-call to promote the event.
7 Another SPAN event, a History of Downtown Clyde Walking Tour, led by Hugh Miner, will start in the downtown park at 10:00 a.m. and will end at the Blockhouse on Saturday, September 22nd.
8 Sandi announced that cooperative initiative between the Village of Clyde and SOAR using “Design Connect” of Cornell U has produced a trail loop design between the north side of the railroad tracks and the improved Erie Canal remnants along Route #31 in the village of Clyde which has been submitted for a grant. The Greater Rochester Health Foundation has awarded the project 21K to create the designed trail, to be called the “Blockhouse Loop Trail” when completed.
9 There will be a meeting about updating the kiosks on Thursday, September 6th at noon with Rotary. Hugh and Sandi will represent SPAN. A discussion of the changes, a thicker plexiglass or possibly “Lexan” could be used.
10 Sandi announced that at the October meeting, we should bring in our ideas for next year’s activities for SPAN.
11 Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Next meeting: Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018.
