Clyde SPAN Minutes: 05-03-2016

The minutes of the May 3rd, 2016 meeting of SPAN held at St. John’s School Hall at 6:30.

1 Hugh Miner mover to accept the April minutes, seconded by Rose Jeanne Strakal. Motion passed.

2 Treasurer John Robert reported a current balance of $5089.86 which included a 100. Donation to the Big Red Book Shelf from Pearl Tech of Savannah.

3 Rose Jeanne Strakal reported that we have 4 new members, bringing our total for this year to 65.

4 Steve Moore reported on the status of the Arts Festival. They receive their first check and registration form back. They are working on getting permits. A “paint and pasta night” was discussed as an activity, or a “wine and design”.

5 Dave Hickey called the Canal Clean Sweep in the Clyde area a success. SPAN and SOAR members collected a huge pile of debris, most of which was brought to Lauraville Landing or some bags were left along the trails to be picked up by the Clyde highway trucks. The Clean Sweep concluded with a hot dog roast, after which several SPAN members and other volunteers proceeded to the Lauraville Loop camp grounds to help clear away some of the brush.

6   More work needs to be done in the campsite area. A question of the use of mulch as a base for tents needs to be answered. June 4th is Trail Day. Sandi Bastedo is working with Ann Fenton from the village office to settle some lease and approval questions. May 14th is scheduled as a work day at 2:00 P.M. The Cornell students will return to say goodbye on May 18th. It was determined that grant or no grant we must get the picnic tables made. John Robert moved that SPAN purchase the picnic tables, seconded by Sandi Bastedo. Motion passed.

7 Sandi Bastedo gave a report on SOAR .A Route 31 yard sale is contemplated from Savannah through Clyde and Lyons. Our participation was discussed, perhaps sponsoring a location in the central park. Hugh Miner moved “…that SPAN explore participation in the Route 31 yard sale.”  The Yard Sale is set for August 6TH. National Trail Day is June 4th. Savanna will have a dedication of their section of the Erie Canal Trail at 11:00 a.m. at the entrance to the Trail in Savannah. There is a “Close the Gaps” meeting at the Audubon Society on May 20th from 10 to 11.

Motion seconded by Dave Hickey. Motion passed.

8 Hugh Miner brought up the existence of some 100 mugs in his shed. Hugh wondered if we could have decals with a tie in to the bicentennial of Erie Canal in Clyde applied to the mugs. John Robert moved”…that we pursue the decal format (1 -4 pictures).”  Motion seconded by Rose Jeanne Strakal. Motion carried.

9 Sandi talked about improving our internet image with a facebook page. Barb Monsour could set it up for us. Cheryl Bonnell moved”… that we ask Barb Monsour to set up a facebook page”, seconded by Bill Thoms. Motion carri8ed.

10 Hugh announced a Drum Circle event for June 7th at the next SPAN meeting to be held at Lauraville Landing.

11 There was a discussion about a proposed “music night” with a barbershop quartet from Liverpool, NY.  This might be a part of an ice cream social Friday night in the park. Dates were discussed.

Clyde SPAN Minutes: 04-05-2016

The minutes of the regular Tuesday meeting of SPAN held at 70 Glasgow Street at 6:30 on April 5th, 2016.

Present: Tom Castellano; Cheryl Bonnell, David Hickey; Steve Moore; John Robert; Sandi Bastedo; and Hugh Miner.

1 Tom Castellano called the meeting to order at 6:30

2 Hugh Miner moved to accept the amended March 1st minutes, seconded by John Robert.  Motion passed.

3 The treasurer reported a current balance of $5606.86.

4 John Robert gave the membership report for Rose Jeanne Strakal as 63 members.

5 Dave Hickey reported that the annual Canal Clean Sweep is scheduled to commence in our area at Lauraville Landing at 10 a.m. 0n Saturday, April 23rd. We have received tee shirts for the participants and large plastic bags for our work details from the Canal Corp. We will divide into work groups and disperse to the outer limits of our trails and work toward Lauraville Landing where a hot dog roast will await the volunteers. Wear appropriate clothing, bring sun screen, and gloves. Sandi Bastedo said the other groups will be participating.

6 Steve Moore reported about the art festival planned for the 24th and 25th of September. Tee
shirts have been designed for participants. It was suggested that Savannah people might donate and funds to the Savannah Chamber and Clyde folks could donate to SPAN. It was further suggested that the SPAN treasurer could hold funds in a special account such as “Art Fund”. There was a discussion about the advisability of applying now for the 501c3 designation.  On the pro side was the need for applying for grant money, on the con side was the cost and the effort to make the application. Also discussed was the future role of art in our community and how it could transform our identity.  Hugh Miner moved “…that our treasurer create an Art Budget line in SPAN’s account.”, seconded by Cheryl Bonnell. Motion passed. 

7 The group agreed that we need to set up a meeting to plan our next steps for the campgrounds at Lauraville Loop. The date was set for April 6th at SPAN headquarters at 12:30.  We need to create a timeline and a list of materials for a SOAR grant application.

8  Sandi  Bastedo gave a summary of the activity of the Cornell Co-op in our area at this time.
The project “Eat Smart” was announced for Tues. May 3rd to be held at St. John’s Hall from 5:30 to 6:30.  Eat Smart educator from Cornell will bring recipes for us to cook and then to eat.
The next SOAR meeting is scheduled for the Savannah Town Hall for April 19th at 6:30.
There will be a Close the Gaps meeting at 10:00 on April 14th.
Sandi Bastedo outlined the work being done by SOAR in Savannah.
Kelly Farrell, a student from Cornell, will be working in our area or 10 weeks in the summer
starting on June 6th.

9 Tom Castellano gave a handout listing the activity in the Bright Red Bookshelf project. He estimated about 3500 books have been handed out so far. There is a Traveling Books – Reading for Daycare program started. There is a “Home for Books” Headstart program started.  Four banners stating “Read to Me “will be erected in the area elementary schools and a very large one will be placed downtown in Clyde.

10 Hugh Miner read a letter from John Gould asking SPAN for a donation to this summer’s
Farmer’s Market. Sandi Bastedo moved “…for SPAN to donate $200 to the Farmer’s Market.”, seconded by Cheryl Bonnell. Motion passed.

11 We need to upgrade the 3 kiosks. John Robert suggested we look at this task on Clean
Sweep Day.

12 We need to get, and receive, our respective minutes from other civic organizations. This could be done by email once we make that arrangement with the various secretaries.

Clyde SPAN Minutes: 03-01-2016

The minutes of the March 1, 2016, SPAN regular meeting held at 70 Glasgow Street at 6:00 P.M.

Present: Tom Castellano; Rose Jeanne Strakal; Cheryl Bonnell; Hugh Miner; Len Gromoske;
Cindy Gromoske; John Robert; Sandi Bastedo; John Tellier; and arriving 20 minutes late, David
Hickey

1. Call to order by President Tom Castellano at 6:00.

2. John Robert moved to accept the February minutes, seconded by Sandi Bastedo. Motion
carried.

3. Treasurer John Robert reported a balance of $5318.66.

4. Rose Jeanne gave a membership report: 34 renewals, 12 new members, bringing our total to
51 current members.

5. Hugh Miner gave a progress report on the Lauraville Landing project: He gave a rundown on
our vision and a summary of the activities underway so far.

6. Sandi Bastedo gave a SOAR report: 
Savannah is sponsoring a mural to be painted on canvas 
by Beverly Owens and to be mounted on an old bridge abutment at the end of the west shore trail
in Savannah. The community has given input to the themes that will be depicted. They plan to
unveil the mural on Trail Day, June 4th.

On Friday, September 23rd, the Global Mural Conference will send a tour bus to Clyde and
Savannah to view our murals.
SOAR and the Savannah Chamber are planning for the art festival to be held in Savannah on the
24th and 25 of September.

The Audubon Center will have a Wildlife Fest on May 7th at the Center.

Brian Secor purchased the abandoned Crusoe House and will use it as a future welcoming center
and museum.

The Savannah Chamber is working with the “Close the Gaps” group to direct a trail through
Savannah to connect with Montezuma.

Eat Smart New York (ESNY) sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative will have a “Family Night
of Cooking” on May 3rd. Tentative location will be at 70 Glasgow depending on the number of
participants. 

The next SOAR Community Meeting will be March 17th at 6:30 at the Clyde SPAN office so 
please join us especially if you have ideas for projects that will improve the health of the community.

7. Dave Hickey reported that SPAN has been registered with Canal Clean Sweep at Lauraville
Landing at 10:00 a.m. on April 23rd. Hot dog roast to follow. The Canal Corp. wishes each

8. A possible April SPAN activity would be a question and answer session with someone
knowledgeable about computers.

9. A June activity might involve a drum circle.

The Meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m. There followed a “Beat the Blahs” session. We were
joined by members of the community to view several amusing You Tube presentations
projected from a computer to a large space on the wall. Refreshments were available.

Clyde SPAN Minutes: 02-02-2016

The minutes of the SPAN meeting held at 70 Glasgow Street on February 2nd 2016 at 6:45.

Present: Tom Castellano; Sandi Bastedo; Hugh Miner; John Robert; Dave Hickey; Rose Jeanne Strakal; Brad Shimp and Barbara Monsour.

1. Brad Shimp was treated first as he had to leave early. Brad brought some questions by the Village Board regarding SPAN’s plan for the Lauraville Landing campgrounds. For example, will we have a check-in-check-out policy? A discussion followed wherein it was decided that it would be a good idea to have a pamphlet created which explained our policies once they have been thought out. Also suggested was a joint SPAN/ local citizen meeting to explain our ideas.

2. Hugh announced that there will be a 2:00 p.m. meeting this Saturday, Feb. 6 with the Cornell student, Quinn Uesugi, his friend, and any interested SPAN or SOAR member to discuss the plans for the campgrounds.

3. As to the L-shaped property we would like to acquire, progress is being made and documents are now in the lawyer’s hands.

4. The treasurer reported a balance of $4507.28. He is checking the accuracy of the $92. Bill from ARC. A motion was made to “pay the Dryden Mutual bill of $210.14” by Sandi Bastedo and seconded by Rose Jeanne Strakal. The motion carried.

5. Membership: We currently have 70 members. We are sending out membership letters with return envelopes, a letter about our future and a page of color pictures of SPAN activities to 187 active and potential members plus 24 hand delivered envelopes.

6. Sandi Bastedo announced that there will be a Trail Work group working on Lock 65 on Clean Sweep weekend, April 22-24. SPAN and other area volunteers will work in our area as we have traditionally picked Saturday, April 23, 2016, for our contribution. We usually begin at 10:00 a.m. and finish about noon with a hot dog roast at Lauraville Landing.

7. Sandi gave an update on SOAR activities:
    The art teacher at Clyde-Savannah will be using the SPAN offices to hang some of their art on our walls.
    There is a “Lego Club”, theme based, at the public library.
    On April 5th, Margaret will have an “Eat Smart New York” program on nutrition.
    Barb Monsour will be at the parent –teacher’s meeting in March.

8.  Tom Castellano announced that Bill Garofono would be a good choice for a future SPAN program.

9. Other Business: Rose Jeanne asked if anyone is sending flowers to new businesses. It was moved to “…send a plant not to exceed $50.,to Bob Deneiri’s  new office”. Motion carried.

10. John Robert pointed out that we need to know who actually owns the kiosks. Also the information on the kiosks needs to be updated.

Clyde SPAN Minutes: 01-05-2016

The minutes of the SPAN meeting on January 5th 2016, held at 70 Glasgow Street at 6:30 p.m.
Present: Tom Castellano; Sandi Bastedo; Rose Jeanne Strakal; Hugh Miner; Larry Warfels  and David Hickey

1 Nominations: A slate of 2016 officers was presented

2 Minutes for November meeting – moved to be accepted by Hugh Miner, seconded by Rose Jeanne Strakal. Motion carried.

3 The treasurer reported a balance of $4605.28.

4 Meetings with other organizations: Hugh reported that one idea is to share minutes with the presidents of the various organizations.

5 John Robert reported a discussion the Chamber had. The Chamber wants SPAN to take over the maintenance of the kiosks. The Chamber had three major projects: the angels; the kiosks; and the bike riders. One question asked was who actually owns the kiosk structures. If SPAN agrees to take over the kiosks, there is an account of about $780 set aside for care and upkeep that could be transferred.
Hugh Miner moved ” …that we accept responsibility for the kioska and accept the check for $785.35 from the chamber” Rose Jeanne seconded it. The motion carried.

6  Membership report: Hugh’s letter is to be included in the mailings. The envelopes will have member information lines to be filled out. The email space will be moved up away from the gummed seal.
Wayne ARC printed last year’s letter. In charge was a Mr. VanValkengburgh.
Rose Jeanne will order 200 envelopes and some labels.
There is some final editing of the last paragraph “looking forward with SPAN”. There will also be a page of pictures of some of SPAN’s activities.
There will be a short meeting to fold and assemble on Jan. 14th . We will try to expand to 200 names.

7  Lauraville Campgrounds: Hugh reported that the November 21st clean the brush work at Lauraville Landing was a big success. Students from Cornell arrived to help along with some boy scouts and their scout master, plus some SOAR and SPAN volunteers all worked to clear the layout.
As to the L-shaped I k property, that is still in the works and we will revisit the transfer in the spring.

8  As to the annual chicken barbeque fund raiser, we have decided to wait until the new officers are named at the fire department.
